THINGS TO DO IN AN ELEVATOR:

When there's only one other person in the elevator, tap them on the shoulder and then pretend it wasn't you.
Push the buttons and pretend they give you a shock. Smile, and go back for more.
Ask if you can push the button for other people, but push the wrong ones.
Call the Psychic Hotline from your cell phone and ask if they know what floor your on.
Hold the doors open and say your waiting for a friend. After a while, let the doors close, and say, "Hi Gregg. How's your day been"
Drop a pen and wait until someone goes to pick it up,then scream,"That's mine!"
Bring a camera and take pictures of everyone in the elevator.
Move your desk into the elevator and whenever anyone gets on, ask if they have an appointment.
Lay down the twister mat and ask people if they would like to play.
Leave a box in the corner, and when someone gets on, ask them if they can hear ticking.
Pretend you are a flight attendant and review emergency procedures and exits with the passengers.
Ask, "Did you feel that?"
Stand really close to someone, sniffing them occasionally.
When the doors close, announce to the others, "It's okay, don't panic, they open again!"
Swat at flies that don't exist.
Call out, "Group Hug!" and then enforce it.
Grimace painfully while smacking your forehead and muttering,
Crack open your briefcase or purse, and while peering inside, ask, "Got enough air in there?"
Stand silently and motionless in the corner, facing the wall,without getting off.
Stare at another passenger for a while, then announce in horror, "Your one of THEM!" and back away slowly.
Wear a puppet on your hand and use it to talk to the other passengers.
Listen to the elevator walls with your stethoscope.
Make explosion noises when anyone presses a button.
Stare, grinning at another passenger for a while, then announce, "I have new socks on".
Draw a little square on the floor with chalk and announce to the other passengers, "This is MY personal space!"

I was on the Isle of Wight last weekend to visit a friend and lead the Southampton University Hillwalking Club daywalk, and I came across many tunnels and signs to tunnels.

I'm not for a second suggesting that the Boldrewood Tunnel, which may or may not be linked to the Southampton Central tunnel (running from the Chandlers Ford Asda to the West Quay shopping center) is thus connected to the dissued IoW pedestrial tunnel which was built during the war to allow save evacuation from Southampton to the IoW in the event of Soton being bombed. But it might.

But what I am saying is that we must keep our eyes out for tunnels all over the place, you never know where one might pop up. Send all your tunnel related photos to location@boldrewoodtunnelsoc.com and we'll post them here.

Not quite the Boldrewood Tunnel, but a tunnel none the less. This was a deserted section of platform I came accross on the Prague underground (Metro).

Suspicious Diggings

I know it's the hollidays and all but if you are in Southampton for any reason (perhaps through being chained to the place as a PhD student for example) then it might be worth checking out the union concourse. There have been a number of very interesting things going on, but unfortunately I've not had my camera about my person in order to photo blog them.

Suffice to say that they have dug up much of the Concourse and at one point had a crane type machine that had a concrete pipe connection. One of those manipulatable arms for filling in hard to reach places with concrete. How strange.

One might think, in the light of the Unions refusal to accept BTS as an affiliated society on ground of it being 'irrelevant', that they have been spooked and so have decided to fill the tunnel with concrete to prevent any further exploration by any university society. I guess we gave them the impetus they needed to finish the job once and for all.

So the obvious call is for anyone from Civil engineering to find concrete tunneling equiptment so we can continue the exploration.

True Altruism

Ladies and Gentlemen…I have recently witnessed a most disturbing conversation. It appears that many people do not believe in true altruism…that people do not do ‘nice’ things for other people unless there is something in it for themselves. As your welfare secretary, I am concerned with the welfare of all 359 of you. However, I am also concerned by the welfare of the greater campus population. This cynicism and lack of faith in human kindness disturbs and worries me. I am therefore asking each and everyone of you to D.I.G. a T.U.N.N.E.L (for those of you who don’t know what a T.U.N.N.E.L. is, please see BTS website). Whether this is doing your housemates washing up, making them a cup of tea, buying someone else a pint, or giving someone a hug, it is a T.U.N.N.E.L. By doing this, you will be restoring faith in human kindness, making people smile and helping to make the campus a happier and better place.

It's been raining down in Southampton the past couple of days, but not in a bad way I feel. It's been that light rain which is particularly wet but not very heavy, giving a damp look to the world mixed with that rather splendid fresh smell. It's just the sort of weather that might make some people want to be in a tunnel. Not me though.

If you are one of those tunnel lovers then you'll be pleased to hear that on Thursday there is a BTS social staring @ 8 in the Stags Head (union bar). See you there!

Welcome to the Boldrewood Tunnel Soc blog. Yes, this is the blog of the very new and very exciting Boldrewood Tunnel Society at Southampton University.

The society exists to spread the love of tunnels in general and in particular locate and potentially re-open the fabled tunnel that connects Boldrewood and Highfield campuses.

So will you join in the fight? If so head over to the BTS website and sign up. You know you want to. Even Dave Gorman is involved (that really is him).
